Stem Cell Therapy

Regenerative medicine is at the cutting edge of medical technology.  When injured, the body generally heals damaged tissue with a fibrous scar that, while helpful, is rarely as functional as the original tissue that it replaced.  The goal of regenerative medicine is to administer a treatment to injured tissue (usually tendon, ligament or cartilage) that will encourage regeneration of that damaged tissue with cells of its own kind, rather than with scar tissue in the hope of restoring a greater degree of original function.  Veterinarians at the New Jersey Equine Clinic harvest tissue or cells from the body that are sent to a commercial stem-cell laboratory where the stem cells are isolated and cultured.  The lab returns these cells by express mail and they are then injected into the injured area to promote more functional healing.
